Well.... believe me I wish it was that simple. You see, I have to work. My expenses are comparable to my lost income! Get the point.

Here I was, INCOME-LESS, UNEMPLOYED and UNWANTED! I had to decide, "what do I do now"? Actually the choice was made for me. Since no one wanted me, I was stuck with myself. That meant rebuilding my book at age 55! For years I pitted those young brokers just starting out in the business.  Now I was one of them, only I was not young!  BRUTAL is the only words to describe the last 9 months.

I was lucky in the sense that I had a few bucks squirreled away so I was not too desperate.

I was also lucky in that I had kept my insurance license up to date for the last 6 years.  But I now longer have my series 7 and other securities licenses.

So what did I do? I started prospecting for annuity business. Oh yeah, I could not cold call. Not only do I hate cold calling, but the "do not call" list loomed over me.

Since I was not going to cold call, I started investigating all the "prospecting systems" out there. You know the ones, they promise the "mother of all mother prospecting systems" or get in on "pre-launch", or the "mentor system", or the web site where the prospects will FLOOD in, or the 3 letter or 3 postcard system! 

I even signed up with 4 FMO's just so I could see there "sales systems" ( All I ever got out of them is confusion over which insurance company was with what FMO.)

Here a quick summary of the steps I initially took.

First I ordered one system by one of the (self proclaimed) big guns in financial marketing. Got the system in the mail a week later and in the first 5 minutes was confused as hell. It was a mess. No direction, no fulfillment pieces and the client material was a nightmare... a law suit waiting to happen!!!

Seriously, I could not imaging anyone with any conscience using this material, so I sent it back that day!

Next, I was about to make a trip 2000 miles away to attend a seminar for a prospecting system that was offered free by an FMO (field marketing organization). The system sounded great and all I had to do was fly in for a few day training (I had to pay for the travel). Problem was they would not tell me anything about the system until I got there, so I would be flying across the country blindly based on how great they told me it was! What am I stupid? I actually considered it! That was until I ACCIDENTALLY found out what it was all about, then I dropped the idea like a hot coal. It was a bait and switch operation that they swore was not! Yikes, that was a close call!

I had to do something so I settled on a 3 post card system. You know the drill, send your list a different postcard every week for weeks and the phone will ring off the hook. So I bought a list and send it too 5000 names, that will only cost you $1300+ per week. So I did it, send these lame postcards out and keep meticulous records of my replies. Here are the results:

First week: 3 replies (requests for the free report)

Second week: no replies

Third week: 4 replies

Here's an exact quote from my diary during that period:

8/24 "Through today I have only received 3 replies.... loads of of undeliverables... almost 20%... this from the biggest list company in the county. Very disappointing."

So far, failure is the only word for this mess.

The one thing I quickly learned about these "Marketing Guru's" is that they are all full of shit! (excuse my French please). The only ones making money are them!

You see they don't really think about the fact that you will be spending 10 or 15 times the amount you pay them for their system to implement that system. Why should they care, it's not their money. The only thing they think about is making you think that they are giving you something for your money.. In their mind THAT SOMETHING does not have to really work. (What the hell I trying to say?)  Simply put, most of these guys think it's more important to overwhelm you with junk, that way you can't easily figure out that their system doesn't work! 

Most of what they give you in these systems is OLD material. Some of the fulfillment products (reports, brochures, etc) are years old and quote old out of date data! Material that could never pass a compliance test. I was embarrassed by some of the material they sent it was so crappy.

Can you imagine sending someone a report that quotes Are you tired of 1 or 2 percent CD's? That's the kind of junk most of these guys provide.

Back to my story. Next I called one these "guru's" on the phone and had a conversation. I told him about the dismal non-existent returns I was getting with his system. I asked him what to do and he told me what he would do is get in his car and go to the neighborhood I mailed to and start knocking on doors handing out the report! A..........not happening!!!!! Next I tried putting one of the postcards as newspaper ad..............no luck, just one lousy call! A good ad whether on a postcard or as a newspaper ad should draw well regardless.

Was it time to slit my wrists?

I considered seminars, but the cost was prohibitive. I already blew a pile of dough.  Everyone I know who is doing them is thanking about stopping. Why, because the plate lickers have taken over the seminars. Yes, you can still do it successfully, but it needs to be done right. AND, quite frankly not everyone is cut out to be a pubic speaker.

So here I was back at square one. Lot's of money spent, lots of time spent, and no return to speak of!

Then one morning I had an epiphany! You know an awakening of sorts. (I had a gypsy tell me I was psychic once, this must have been the moment she was talking about)

I created an ad (...did you hear that, I created it ) that was the OPPOSITE of what was working for some local "bucket shops". That's right, my thought was why not "expose" the BS of the bucket shops. People who would be interested in what the bucket shops were selling would certainly be interested in what it was all about. After all, all I want is someone interested in investing NOW to talk to. (that's right, I want them to call me)

So I created an advertisement to go in the newspaper, 2 columns by two inches. Placed this ad in the front section of my local paper and ran it once! On that Monday I got 47 calls! That's right, 47, and for the entire week I got a total of 74 calls, from just one insertion of this ad! Over the next few weeks I put the ad in the paper once each week, total calls from the first month: over 200. Let me regress a minute, back in 80's (yes grandpa) we used to run an ad on the Bernard Meltzer radio show in NY. At the end of the ad, Bernard would tell his audience to "call my friends at..."  As soon as he said that phone would literally ring off the hook. That's how I built my first book. I haven't seen an advertising program that makes the phone ring like that since then..... that is until now!

I found that I could not, so I switched to just 2 weeks per month. Just so I could keep up with the volume. I quickly built my list of viable clients to well over a thousand and will keep there by deleting the ones I will never sell and replacing them with new people.

That's life and no one can change that unless they perfect their selling skills! (I will reveal that the first call I received ended in a discussion of what to do with a half million dollar rollover)
